At SemSem the day begins in the early morning, in the soft glow of the kitchen, where the SemSem team gets together, with an understanding developed over years of shared purpose. This ability to know one another, to have a steady rhythm working under a streamlined system is a great strength. It was a rhythm perfected from day one under the guidance of co-owner and C.E.O, Mayssaa.
I am happy to say that I have had the pleasure of knowing Mayssaa, Mohammed and some of her team members for almost a decade now. I first met Mayssaa, spring 2016 after enjoying my first brunch experience at SemSem, with my husband. We had grandma’s breakfast and became captivated by the food, atmosphere and service.
Consistency is key
I have always been so impressed by the system they created for the menu items; consistency was very important to Mayssaa and continues to be. Their dedication ensures the authentic tastes of their Palestinian root’s shines through.
I’m also impressed by their skilled staff, every member gifted with expert hands and a keen eye for detail. This level of dedication ensures that the food is always excellent, and customers know exactly what to expect. Personally, one of my biggest pet peeves is finding a great restaurant, only to have an inconsistent experience on my next visit, where the quality can drop significantly. SemSem has never had this problem. While they share the valuable ‘fast-food’ virtue of perfect consistency through regimented systems, they deliver it with the care and quality of a truly authentic restaurant.
Covid-cramps, overcoming hardship
Although this cohesive team’s resilience was put to the test during the pandemic, like many restaurant owners in Ottawa. SemSem certainly endured some covid-cramps during this time. While unfortunately so many restaurants were forced to close their doors, SemSem managed to improvise. They adapted and persevered. They pivoted to delivery and pick-up, and eventually they setup exclusive booths that met with health-safety standards of Ontario. I got to enjoy a few meals with them, during this time, and even with the hardships and all the stress, the SemSem team never lost their spirit. They continued to smile through it all, delivering delicious food, comfort and normalcy. Something we were all “craving” at that time.
a decade of success
Mayssaa and Mohamed and their dedicated team carry pride in what they do. I think their pride, their commitment to each other and their heritage, as well as their consistency, are the secret ingredients for their success. If you’re not aware, they’re going on a decade of business in Ottawa. I will be there when they celebrate that anniversary.
May SemSem continue to grow, solidifying its place as one of Ottawa’s iconic, go-to spots for authentic Levantine cuisine for years to come. They have certainly earned a legion of devoted, authentic-foodie fans, like me!
